Art Dubai Announces the Guest Curators for its 2020 edition


Seven international independent curators to bring fresh perspectives and new voices into Art Dubai 2020’s programming, through diverse and forward-thinking platforms of artistic discovery.

Guest independent curator collaborations for Art Dubai 2020 (March 25-28) will feature:

Curator Nancy Adajania to programme Art Dubai 2020 Bawwaba section

Mumbai-based independent cultural theorist and curator Nancy Adajania joins as guest curator of the second iteration of Bawwaba, to offer her vision on new global perspectives and to broaden conversations about artistic practices beyond traditional western-led geographical scopes and narratives. This gallery section features solo presentations and showcases works created within the last year or conceived specifically for the fair.



Residents 2020 focuses on the sub-Saharan continent, curated by Kabelo Malatsie

Residents is Art Dubai’s unique artist residency and gallery section which returns to the fair in March for its third edition.

Johannesburg-based independent curator Kabelo Malatsie oversees the forthcoming programme which will focus on contemporary art production from the sub-Saharan African continent. Participating artists will take part in a 4 to 8 week residency in the UAE, immersing themselves in the life and culture of the Emirates and the local art scene to create new artworks for the fair.



Curators Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath to programme Art Dubai Modern section

Curatorial duo Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath, founders of Art Reoriented in Munich and New York, Chairmen of the Montblanc Cultural Foundation in Hamburg and Curators-at-large at the Gropius Bau in Berlin, takes on the curation of Art Dubai Modern, the gallery section which presents museum-quality works by masters from the Middle East, South Asia and Africa.



Exploring the Gulf’s independent artist-run platforms, curated by Munira Al Sayegh

Emirati independent curator Munira Al Sayegh returns to Art Dubai to oversee this edition of Gulf Now, an exhibition focusing on artist-run and grass-root platforms from the Arabian Gulf and their important contributions to the evolution of the cultural landscape in creating new ways of thinking, theory and artistic movements.



Art Dubai 2020 Performance programme, curated by Marina Fokidis

A dynamic and participatory platform bringing to life site-sensitive immersive experiences, Art Dubai’s 2020 Performance programme will be developed by curator Marina Fokidis (Director, Kunsthalle Athena, Greece), and evolve around themes of togetherness and community building.



Art Dubai’s 2020 Commission activates immersive ecologies, curated by Nataša Petrešin-Bachelez in partnership with Art Jameel

Paris-based independent curator Nataša Petrešin-Bachelez joins as curator of 2020’s Commission programme to introduce multi-disciplinary site-specific projects with an ecological focus. Commissions 2020 takes place in partnership with Art Jameel.
