Since its founding in 1991, Andréhn-Schiptjenko has been dedicated to the international representation of both emerging and established contemporary artists from around the globe, showcasing a diverse range of media including painting, sculpture, photography, film, digital media, performance, installation, and site-specific work.
For over three decades, the gallery has organised and curated significant exhibitions within the Nordic context, helping to launch the careers of Scandinavian artists such as Cajsa von Zeipel, Gunnel Wåhlstrand, Annika Elisabeth von Hausswolff, and Matts Leiderstam. It has also provided prominent European or Scandinavian solo exhibitions for artists like Uta Barth, Cecilia Bengolea, José León Cerrillo, Martín Soto Climent, Ridley Howard, Tony Matelli, and Xavier Veilhan. The gallery similarly represents historically significant artists, including Siri Derkert, a pioneering female modernist whose influence continues to resonate with new generations, and Julio Le Parc, a key figure in the Op Art movement.
Artists represented by the gallery frequently participate in major international exhibitions. Recent highlights include a comprehensive survey of Uta Barth’s work at The Getty Museum (2022), an extensive retrospective of Annika Elisabeth von Hausswolff at Moderna Museet in Stockholm and Malmö (2021-2022), and Cecilia Bengolea’s performance at MUDAM, Luxembourg (2022). Jacob Dahlgren, Annika Elisabeth von Hausswolff, Siobhán Hapaska, and most recently, Xavier Veilhan with Studio Venezia (2017), have all represented their countries at the Venice Biennale.
The gallery has established strong relationships with museums and collectors and is actively involved in public art projects. To broaden its international reach and facilitate collaborative, multidisciplinary initiatives, Andréhn-Schiptjenko opened a second location in Paris in spring 2019. This was followed by a relocation to a new, larger venue in Paris during summer 2022, which allows for more ambitious artist presentations.
Since the mid-1990s, Andréhn-Schiptjenko has participated in international art fairs such as The Armory Show, Art Basel, Material Art Fair in Mexico City, and Paris+ par Art Basel. The gallery is a proud member of The Swedish National Gallery Association, Le Comité Professionnel des Galeries d’Art, The Gallery Climate Coalition, and the International Galleries Alliance. Ciléne Andréhn and Marina Schiptjenko have owned and directed the gallery since its inception.
