Founded by curator Aleya Hamza in Cairo in 2013, Gypsum showcases an international, multidisciplinary program focused on engagement with social, political and formal themes that includes five solo and groups shows every year. The gallery represents a group of artists living and working between the Middle East, Europe and the United States whose rigorous and singular art practice varies in medium, form and approach. Gypsum is committed to the production and dissemination of contemporary art and to forging long-standing relationships with its roster of artists. Gypsum is interested in relocating the progressive and investigative art practices that have been associated with the non-profit art sector of Cairo and the Middle East to a commercial gallery context, to redefine society’s understanding of contemporary art, collecting and their relationship to the world around us. Since its inception, the gallery has placed works in public and private collections of the Whitney Museum, the Metropolitan Museum, Bonnefantenmuseum, Barjeel Foundation and Sharjah Art Foundation.
Since the gallery opened its doors to the public, their exhibitions and artists have been featured in Artforum, Frieze magazine, Flash Art, Modern Painters, Canvas, Harper’s Bazaar Art, Metropolis M, art-agenda, Art Daily, Ibraaz, Mada Masr, Al-Ahram Online, Cairo Art Blog and Cairobserver, among others. The represented artists have been acquired by the largest regional and international collections which include the Barjeel Art Foundation, UAE; Sharjah Art Foundation, UAE; Mathaf: Museum of Modern Art in Qatar; Bonnefantenmuseum, The Netherlands; The Metropolitan Museum, USA; The Whitney Museum of American Art, USA; Guggenheim, USA; Foundation Louis Vuitton, France and Castello di Rivoli, Italy.
