Pinksummer, founded and directed by Antonella Berruti and Francesca Pennone, opened its doors in Genoa in 2000. Since 2005, the gallery has been based in Palazzo Ducale, Cortile Maggiore.
A distinctive feature of Pinksummer is its operation in a city that overlooks the Mediterranean, positioned on the threshold of contemporary cultural production and its market. Historically, Genoa has been the site of significant events, including the first Arte Povera exhibition in 1969 and Gordon Matta Clark’s early work *A W-Hole House* in 1973, both of which were made possible by the efforts of private galleries in the city. These environmental factors have provided a backdrop for Pinksummer’s independent and sometimes radical approach to contemporary art, which is realised through exhibitions that address issues of personal and societal concern, such as the relationship between nature and society, sometimes viewed through a utopian lens with an architectural perspective.
“Pinksummer goes to” is a project launched in 2016, driven by the desire to engage with other contexts. This initiative has seen the gallery move to various locations, including Rome for the 2016/2017 season, Palermo in 2018, and the Ligurian Apennines in 2020, as well as exploring historical venues, such as with the *By the Sea* exhibition by Mark Dion.
The gallery’s website serves as an archive of its exhibitions and speculative activities. Press releases often take the form of interviews, with artists invited to share their thoughts in response to carefully crafted questions. The gallery’s name is a reference to a painting by Takashi Murakami, featured in its inaugural exhibition.
