x-ist was founded in 2004 as an art gallery dedicated to supporting both emerging and mid-career contemporary artists, with a focus on universal themes. The gallery exclusively represents 14 artists worldwide and hosts 7 to 8 solo or curated exhibitions each year at its own venue, alongside participation in various international art fairs.

x-ist regularly collaborates with galleries, museums, and institutions around the globe on a variety of projects. Among the international exhibitions and art fairs in which x-ist artists have participated are the following: Ahmet Polat held solo exhibitions at Istanbul Modern Museum, FOAM Amsterdam, and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Ceren Oykut featured in both the 10th Istanbul Biennial and the Lyon Biennial. Ansen exhibited at the Saatchi Gallery in London, and both Ansen and Seda Hepsev have shown at Istanbul Modern Museum.

x-ist artists have also been featured in numerous prestigious art fairs, including Arco Madrid, Artissima, Art Dubai (six times between 2012 and 2022), Art Hong Kong (five times, with the final appearance at Art Basel HK), Art Singapore, Unseen Amsterdam, Art Cologne, Art Miami, and VOLTA New York.
